Rochester Institute of Technology - School of Film and Animation
Mark Anthony Zuniga
My school focuses on both the technical and the creative sides of film and animation. We begin with the history of cinema and continue to study theory as we progress. We are allowed to explore all aspects of filmmaking and by the end of our second year we choose a craft we would like to pursue for a career in.The primary craft tracks are cinematographer, script writer, producer, editor, and director. In addition to the primary tracks, students can pursue more unique tracks, such as special effects, installation art, and sound design. The courses are taught with a hands-on approach and everyone is encouraged to challenge themselves.
A prevalent feeling is that we should not be afraid to make mistakes, as it is better to learn from them now, rather than later outside of the school.
We are encouraged to explore many areas of study within the university, including taking courses outside of our school, and to learn as much as we can and apply it to our projects. The two most important areas of study that our school focuses on are to be technically proficient in your craft for employment and to learn how to express ourselves. At the end of each semester, we gather together as a community and critique the work of our fellow students. Open to the public, these screenings provide another important lesson in the arts: the ability to handle criticism.

You have to begin to lose your memory, if only in bits and pieces, to realise that memory is what makes our lives. Life without memory is no life at all . . . Our memory is our coherence, our reason, our feeling, even our action.
